While entering a port in Peru, a cargo vessel suffered severe damage after colliding with rocks. The accident caused several cracks in the vessel’s hull, and severely damaged its propeller and three tanks. Unable to enter port due to the extent of the damage, the vessel needed urgent repair, and we were ready to step in.
Our team was instantly mobilized to assess the situation at anchorage. However, operating at anchorage presents its own challenges, such as strong currents and significant swell. Despite these conditions, we successfully mapped out the damage and prepared a comprehensive repair proposal, which was approved by the classification society.
The propeller had suffered extensive damage, including deep edge cracks and a severe twist in one of its blades. After collaborating with the attending surveyor, we devised a plan to crop two of the propeller’s damaged tips and grind out the remaining cracks. This operation required precision, and we’re proud to report that the repair was executed flawlessly. The propeller was restored to full functionality and repairs approved by the classification society.
The hull also had several cracks and indentations, particularly in two ballast tanks and the bilge holding tank with lengths up to 2 meter. To address this, we drilled out all cracks to prevent further damage and then tackled the more challenging cracks in the aft tanks. Given the curved shape of the vessel’s hull, we fabricated large custom doubler plates. These plates were carefully contoured to fit the hull, ensuring a perfect seal. Once installed, we fully welded the plates and reinforced them with stiffeners for added strength and long-term stability.
Once the underwater repairs were completed, we emptied the tanks to conduct a thorough internal inspection. Together with the class surveyor, we identified the need for additional reinforcement. We added five cement boxes over the cracks to further secure the affected areas. These cement boxes were carefully sealed, ensuring the integrity of the repaired tanks.
After completing the repairs, the vessel was declared seaworthy and cleared to resume its journey. This operation demonstrates our team’s ability to handle complex underwater repairs in challenging conditions.
